| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project pursues the deeply significant, but highly neglected, topic of unending or continuing pilgrimage on the Shikoku henro. We intended to test the simple hypothesis that religious authority in the social system is proportional to the number of henro circuits completed. This ethnographic work included intensive fieldwork done over five trips to Shikoku. Dozens of interviews were conducted with pilgrims, priests, and other consequential actors related to the pilgrimage. In addition to interviews, a detailed survey was conducted, and numerous other sources of data were employed, including literature and internet postings We cultivated a rich, unparalleled data set and established the basis for new theoretical orientations for the study of pilgrimage. This study produced a book published by Oxford University Press, five peer-reviewed journal articles, and three chapters in edited volumes.

この研究は、現代の四国遍路のデータを用いて、世界的な巡礼研究の分野に新たなパラダイムを確立することを目的とするものである。我々は、聖なる旅の基本的な構築された意味が、それに費やされた時間という重要な変数の関数であることを示す。その際、この分野におけるいくつかの重要な理論や分析的方向性に疑問を投げかける。また、巡礼研究以外の分野でも、現代の宗教性全般について重要な示唆を与えている。
