Outline of Final Research Achievements

The project we carried out was a cross-sectional investigation of definite article meanings and the count-mass distinction, testing L1-Japanese and L1-Spanish L2-English learners at different proficiency levels (intermediate and upper-intermediate) to examine the following three issues: (i) to what extent the nominal domain of learners’ L1, Japanese and Spanish, influences the definite article use and count-mass distinction in L2 English grammars. (ii) whether or not there are particular developmental stages for the definite article and count-mass distinction. (iii) what the ultimate attainment of English definite article use and count-mass distinction for L1-Japanese and L1-Spanish L2-English learners looks like. The results show that the L1 and proficiency play a role in how well L2 learners perform on a range of different tasks.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
