Outline of Final Research Achievements

Negative attitudes towards language learning are common in Japan, yet there is little research on the psychology of resistance towards language learning. This research used an intercultural adjustment perspective to examine learner attitudes from the point of view of psychological resistance. It developed a psychometric instrument, The Linguaculture Motivation Profiler (LMP), to measure attitudes of resistance and engagement towards language learning. It gathered data from university language learners and used this to analyze learner attitudes. Results showed many learners commonly have mixed motivation. They consciously value English, but also have psychological resistance to learning. Results suggest that resistance is a natural part of language learning, and not simply a lack of motivation. The LPP has been made available to teachers seeking to promote learning awareness and better understand learner motivation.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

国際化と外国語教育を推奨する教育政策にも関わらず、多くの学生は言語学習に対する心理的な抵抗を経験している。しかしながら、このような課題に関する研究はほとんど実施されていない。また、学びの過程における心理的ストレスや外国語学習に対する学習者の認識に焦点を合わせた研究成果もあまり報告されていない。否定的な学習者の態度に関する第2言語習得論(SLA)の調査では、学習者の外的要因に焦点をあて、否定的な態度を学習意欲の欠如、または学習の失敗として扱うことが多い。本研究は、外国語を学習することによる心理的な要素を探求することにより、政府の方針とのギャップを埋めることを目的としている。
