Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aimed to investigate whether any biomechanical parameters obtained by 3D-motion analysis of body movements during tracheal intubation procedures on an airway mannequin can objectively distinguish expert anesthesiologists from novice residence. And mean-jerk measurements provided excellent measures for discriminating between experts and novice. From this study we could show that comparing with novice residents, expert anesthesiologists possess a better ability to control their body movements during tracheal intubation procedures, displaying smoother motions at the selected body parts. We will continue studies on automatic analysis of skills during tracheal intubation using artificial intelligence technology.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

臨床手技は定量化、標準化が難しく、初学者の客観的な医学教育の障壁となっている。これまで熟練者の主観に基づいた教授方法が採用され、初学者の技術習得は容易ではなく、高度な医療手技は長年の修業によってしか習得しえなかった。本研究により手技の優劣、上達の定量化が可能であることが示され、これを用いることにより初学者が短期間に高度な医療手技を習得可能な臨床実技教育プログラムの開発の可能性が示唆される。
