Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The involvement of aged neutrophils population in the pathology of sepsis has already been shown previously. In this study, we have demonstrated that aged neutrophils also might be involved in the pathology of sepsis in humans. It was confirmed that the expression of CXCR4, which is a marker of aged neutrophils, was increased in septic patients compared with healthy subjects. In addition, the percentage of aged neutrophils population in the whole blood of septic patients and the severity score (SOFA score) showed a significant inverse correlation. These observations indicate that aged neutrophils might be typical phenotype during transmigration of neutrophils into inflamed tissues.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
