Outline of Final Research Achievements |
When Waseda University toured the United States from 1927 to 1928, the Barry System developed by Sam Barry had already been adopted at the University of Iowa in the Midwest. However, as the American tour of Waseda University was centered in the Pacific Northwest where the Barry System was not known during this period, it is unlikely that Waseda University was responsible for bringing the Barry System back to Japan from their American tour. On the other hand, as Jack Gardner and Clarence Anderson had played the Barry System under Barry, it is possible that Gardner introduced the Barry System to Japan during his visit in 1933. In the Barry System, players are positioned at the high-post and on both wings, and the ball is passed to any of these three players while the passer and receiver perform an outside screen. The outside screen that is a core element of the Barry System was already in use in Japan at the time, and the Barry System introduced by Gardner became widely adopted.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
