Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study clarifies the physiological characteristics of sports-related concussions (SRCs), to determine criteria for assessing their severity, and to define parameters associated with the recovery time required prior to return to contact sports. Subjective symptoms and cognition are currently used to assess the severity of a concussion; non-concussed athletes do not experience the degree of functional decline in the immediate post-game period as do those with a concussion injury. Subjective symptoms, questionnaire-style memory tasks, and assessments of balance varied significantly; findings could not be specifically related to the severity of the concussion. These results suggest the need to consider the influence of sport activity and also the environment in which the baseline measurement were performed for a more complete evaluation of the impact of concussion-associated injuries.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
