Outline of Final Research Achievements

Aseismic processes, including aseismic slip and pore pressure migration, contribute the occurrence of earthquakes. However, aseismic processes are usually difficult to detect because they do not emit observable seismic wave. In this study, I examined aseismic processes prior to large earthquakes by using small earthquakes. The result indicates that aseismic processes prior to the mainshock play important roles in the occurrence of recent large intraplate earthquakes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

地震の発生の理解のためには,震源付近で進行している現象の全体像の理解が不可欠である.しかしながら,揺れを生じさせない現象を捉えることが非常に難しい.本研究では,微小地震を用いることにより間接的に,大地震震源域で地震発生前に進行していた現象について調べた.それにより,少なくない数の大地震の発生前に,流体移動などの現象が生じていることが示された.
得られた知見は,地震発生機構の理解のために極めて重要である.本研究で用いられたアプローチを様々な地震に適用することにより,更なる知見がもたらされると考えられる.
