Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study was conducted to establish characterization techniques using various types of electron microscopes and synchrotron for optimization of formulations. In FY 2019, we successfully optimized observation conditions that minimize electron beam damage to organic-inorganic composite formulations using liquid cell TEM at the University Paris Diderot, France. In FY2023, we conducted XRF analysis and XRF imaging using synchrotron and liquid cell TEM, Diamond Light Source, UK, to clarify the effect of metal nanoparticles in organic-inorganic composite formulations on biofilm-forming bacteria.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

国際共同研究を通して、ナノレベルで電子・光子プローブを用いた新規の有機無機複合製剤および製剤とターゲットとの相互作用の評価を遂行し、その結果をフィードバックさせることで、疾患部位に適した機能性製剤を作製した試みは世界的にも新しい。学術的にも液中TEMと放射光を用いた分光分析の最適条件を見出し、溶液中の製剤とターゲットとの反応をダメージレスでイメージング・分析できた点は非常にインパクトが大きい。さらに、バイオフィルム形成機構を明らかにすることで、バイオフィルム感染症に対して有効な製剤の設計を可能としており、今後、感染症治療に大きく寄与できるため社会的な意義が大きい。
