| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The depiction after the old master styles and the representation of real scenes are major elements of literati landscape painting. This study examines the mutual influences of these two elements on literati painting, focusing on Dong Qi Chang who advocated the importance of study of old master styles in literati works and Shi Tao who denied that and valued the depictions of real scenes, as well as landscape works by representative literati painters such as the Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty, and the Wu School of the Ming Dynasty.
As a result, it has become clear that rendering after old master styles was heavily dependent on a painter's cultural environment, and that having opportunities to view and study old master paintings was a prerequisite for acquiring literati landscape painting, while depiction of real scenes played a role in making up for the lack of opportunities to study old master styles and encouraging to make new developments of landscape painting.

文人山水画は、中国文化そのものの本質に深く根ざした芸術である。元来、山水画は実在の景と不可分であったが、伝統的な尚古主義と典故主義が文人山水画にも影響を与え、文人山水画における倣古主義が決定づけられていった。本研究を通じ、画家の環境における古画学習機会の多寡が、作画における倣古や実景描写に大きく相関し、特に絵画の裾野が拡大した明末以後、その寡少が実景山水や個性的山水様式の創造を促す要因となったことを示した。それは、文人山水画の確立期であった元代文人画家や遠く日本の南画家の作画をも包括した文人画研究にも応用可能な視点であり、文人画を普遍的な芸術活動として考察するための道筋を拓くものである。
