Outline of Final Research Achievements

We examined whether we could predict the functional prognosis by evaluating the serum zinc concentration within 72 h after SCI in a human prospective study. A non-linear regression analysis of 38 SCI patients showed that the serum zinc concentrations in the acute-phase accurately predicted the long-term functional outcome (R2=0.84) more accurately than any other previously reported acute-phase biomarkers.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

近年、iPS細胞などを用いた脊髄再生治療に高い関心が集まっている。しかし、急性期脊髄損傷では自発的な機能回復がしばしば見られ、回復の程度も患者ごとに異なるため、神経学的予後予測は極めて困難である。そのため、新規治療候補薬が急性期脊髄損傷患者にどれほどの麻痺改善効果をもたらすのか判別することが難しく、脊髄損傷に対する新規治療薬開発の大きな障害となっている。
本研究にて、脊髄損傷急性期の血清亜鉛濃度が、これまでに報告されてきたバイオマーカーよりも著しく高い精度で、脊髄損傷患者の運動機能予後を予測可能であることが分かった。本研究の成果は、今後の脊髄損傷の新規治療法開発に寄与しうると確信している
