Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether Leber's disease, which is caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA, affects human endurance. We compared cardiopulmonary endurance in patients with Leber's disease and visually impaired subjects with other diseases. We also investigated whether maximal oxygen uptake and anaerobic work thresholds of patients with Leber's disease could be improved by 6 weeks of high-intensity interval training. Results showed that patients with Reber's disease had lower maximal oxygen uptake and lower anaerobic work threshold than visually impaired patients with other diseases. Furhermore, the patients with Reber's disease showed improvement in maximal oxygen uptake, but not in anaerobic work threshold after 6 weeks of high-intensity interval training.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
