Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
高層の淡い雲の構造解明を主目的に、研究代表者らは高感度高分解能のミリ波レーダ FALCON-I (FMCW Radar for Cloud Observation-I)を開発運用してきた。この装置は空間分解能やドップラー測定の精度が高く大気中に浮遊する昆虫が感度良く観測できることから、どこまで小さい浮遊物が検出できるか、時間・高度分布、季節変化を解明する手法を創設することが本研究の目的であった。 初年度 2018(H30)年度は、9~10月にかけて空中浮遊物を採取する係留気球実験を実施し、FALCON-I で得られたエコーデータとの比較を行った。2019年度はさらに解析を進め、それまでに行った春夏および冬季の空中浮遊物採集実験の結果と比較を詳細に行った。その結果、冬季は浮遊物の空間密度が 春秋の1/5 程度となるがゼロではないこと、大きさが 0.5mm程度以上の浮遊昆虫は、高度 300m において確実に FALCON-I で検出できていること、などがわかった。3年目の最終年度 2020年度は、さらに空中浮遊物を採取する実験を予定していたが、コロナウィルス感染拡大の影響でフィールド実験ができず研究を延長した。2021年度は、国内での FALCON-I の観測と共に、北緯78°の北極域であるノルウェースバールバル諸島で運用している同型装置 FALCON-A での観測を行い解析した。その結果、FALCON-A サイトでは夏季の暖かい日においても昆虫などは高度200m を越える大気中には浮遊していないことがわかった。2022,23年度は、FALCON-I の千葉大での定常観測を継続し、全天雲カメラの改良などを行って性能を向上させて、昆虫の浮遊個体数と気温・風速などの気象条件の相関について総合的な解析を進めた。これらの結果等についてまとめた成果は、順次論文発表や学会での発表を行った。
