Outline of Research at the Start |
The project aims to shed new light on the idealist theory of life and its roots in the theory of matter. This focus on life and matter constitutes an innovative approach to modern philosophical idealism. The focus will be historical in particular, examining evolving theories of life as they developed in, and arguably gave rise to, the main idealist schools of philosophy in Britain and Germany, and evolved through thinkers in France and the Dutch Republic. Three principal objectives stem from the central aim, each concerning a distinct period in the developing theory of life.

Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The Principal Investigator wrote an introduction and two chapters for a book, Matter and Life in Coleridge, Schelling, and Other Dynamical Idealists. Other members produced one chapter each. This book will be published by Springer Nature. The book studies theories of the heart, metaphysics of powers, race, evolution of species, the definition of life, etc. The PI has also published an article in Japanese on Coleridge and the theory of matter. He also published an article relating Coleridge's theory of life to the theory of matter. He also started a cross-faculty research group called Living Ideas at Shimane University. The PI gave a paper to the group on his 'Schema of Value Realization'. The Living Ideas cross-faculty research group has hosted and has forthcoming talks on architecture, literature, fossil science, medicine, justice, mathematics, encyclopedia creating, bioscience, and many topics related to this Kakenhi project on Living Ideas: Dynamic Philosophies of Life and Matter.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
This project showed how idealist philosophy from 1650-1850 anticipated 20th- and 21st-century physics, as both saw matter arising from energy. It also examined historical theories of what life is and how it arises. Socially significant, it highlights the value of ecology and circulation of energy.
