近年、人間の全体的な能力である「コンピテンシー」に関する関心が、日本でも急速に高まりつつある。そこで本研究では、コンピテンシー開発の先進地域であるヨーロッパ諸国を対象とした現地調査により「地理コンピテンシー」に関する資料・情報を収集し、それらの研究成果をもとに、日本の学校教育の現状に適合した「地理コンピテンシー」の開発と、コンピテンシーを軸とした地理教育カリキュラムを検討することを目的とする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was to clarify the characteristics of geographic competencies in European countries that made an early shift to a competency-oriented curriculum, and to examine the content of geographic competencies that should be developed in Japanese school education. As a result, it became clear that a major challenge has been to develop a good balance between generic competencies and specialized knowledge of geography. In order to solve this problem, inquiry-based fieldwork is being promoted in Portugal and "mystery" learning activities are being promoted in Germany, indicating that European countries are focusing on the development of specific learning activities aimed at fostering geographic competencies.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
現行の学習指導要領では「資質・能力」の育成が目指され、コンピテンシー重視のカリキュラムへの転換が図られているが、日本の地理教育におけるコンピテンシー研究の蓄積は乏しく、コンピテンシーの具体的な育成方法についての議論はほとんど進んでいない。本研究では、コンピテンシー研究の先進事例が見られるヨーロッパ諸国の地理教育の実態を踏まえて、コンピテンシーを育成するための具体的な学習活動のうち「フィールドワーク」と「ミステリー」の詳細な内容を明らかにすることができた。これらの成果は、日本におけるコンピテンシーへの理解と授業での活用を促進するために不可欠な知見であり、その学術的意義は高いと考えられる。
