Outline of Research at the Start

強相関電子系と呼ばれる物質群では、膨大な数の電子が相互作用することで個々の電子が持つ自由度に起因し超伝導や相転移と言った多彩な協力現象が観測される。反強磁性量子臨界点近傍では、極低温まで磁気相関が発達し続けることにより、量子ゆらぎを媒介とした非従来型超伝導などの興味深い現象が観測されている。一方、強磁性量子臨界現象の報告は少なく、理論研究からは反強磁性の場合とは異なる相図を持つことが提唱されているがその本質は未解明である。本課題はこれまで技術的に困難であった極低温かつ高圧という複合極限環境下の中性子回折実験を行い、この分野の主要なテーマの一つである量子相転移現象の解明への新たな知見を得る。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have developed anvil-type high-pressure technique that can be applied to SENJU, Extreme Environment Single Crystal Neutron Diffractometer installed in the pulsed neutron source MLF at J-PARC. Using this technique, we focus on the newly discovered pressure-induced antiferromagnetic phase that appears after the ferromagnetic phase is suppressed in the itinerant ferromagnet LaCrGe3. We aimed to elucidate the quantum critical phenomenon of this material by clarifying it by neutron diffraction measurement.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

J-PARC MLFの単結晶中性子回折装置SENJUを用いて10GPa程度までの精密な構造解析や磁性研究を可能にする技術開発を行ない、液体ヘリウム温度以下の極低温にて中性子回折実験を定常的に行なう試料環境と測定手法を構築した。これにより量子臨界現象を含む他の圧力下物性測定との間で相補的な物性研究を進めることが可能となり、高圧力下での物性現象の諸因子解明にミクロな立場から迫ることができる。
