Outline of Research at the Start

MRIは磁場と電磁波を利用して体内を画像化するものであり、現在は計測感度のよい高磁場のMRIが主流である。近年では超高磁場のMRIも導入が進みつつあるが、磁場が高いほど電磁波を体内で均一に作用させることが難しく、画質はまだ十分とはいえない。そこで本研究では、複数の電磁波を体内で重ね合わせることで、必要な領域全体にわたって均一に作用させる仕組みを実用化し、局所高解像度撮像などへ応用する。ただし、電磁波には体温上昇作用があり、複雑な構造をもつ体内での体温上昇を正確に把握しなければならない。このため本研究ではMRI画像から体温上昇を精度よく推定できるシステムを開発し、装置に実装することで安全性を保証する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

7T超高磁場MRIは、3T以下の従来のMRIと比べて高い計測感度を有する反面、静磁場やRF磁場の不均一性による画質劣化の側面も顕著となるため、高画質で高解像度な画像を得るにはさまざまな工夫が必要である。本研究はこの点に着目し、計測技術の研究開発を進めてきた。今年度も前年度に継続し、脳機能イメージングに使用できる高解像度EPIの開発とそのための刺激提示法、そして画像再構成法の開発を継続した。
EPIは通常、1枚の撮像に必要なすべての信号を一度に収集するが、高解像度化によって必要な信号数が増加すると、後半の信号ほどその「質」が低下し、実効的な解像度はいくら画素サイズを小さくしても改善しない。これを避けるため、本研究課題では一貫して、1枚の画像の生成に必要な信号の収集を複数回に分割する方法を検討しており、これまでに一定の効果が得られている。ただし、この場合、実用上の課題が2つ、顕在化する。1つは、信号収集を分割することによる時間分解能の著しい低下である。もう1つは、信号収集のフレーム間での体動による信号の変化である。前者については昨年度から刺激提示方法の改良を加え、見た目の信号収集時間は変わらないものの、信号収集タイミングと刺激提示タイミングを少しずつずらすことにより実効的な時間軸でのサンプリングを増やす方法を引き続き検討した。後者はこの類の撮像法に本質的に問題となるものであるが、動きによる信号変動を統計的に推定し、それを除去することで画質の飛躍的な向上をもたらすことができた。
以上のような技術開発を行うにあたり、例えば画質がどの程度改善したのかを物理的観点または視覚的観点から適切に評価できることも重要である。そこで本研究課題においては前記技術開発と並行して画質評価法にについても検討を行った。
以上の研究結果およびその過程で得られた副次的成果は国内外の学会、研究会等において発表した。

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

当初の計画であった、並列RF送信技術の安全性評価が進んでいない。これはもともと、撮像される画像から体温上昇を推定する技術の開発であるが、ファントム実験系ではよい結果が得られているものの、ヒトでは誤差が大きく、なおも実用的ではない。ただしこの問題についてはハードウェア側の改善が進んだため、今後はその安全性評価および有用性についての検討を進めることにしている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

継続して高解像度化に関する研究開発を進めるとともに、並列送信法についての安全性評価およびその有効活用法についての検討を優先的に進める予定である。
