Outline of Research at the Start |
This research examines the role of digital technologies (e.g., AI, Big Data, IoT, etc.) in the innovation process of companies and further identifies managerial actions at both the organizational and process levels that are needed to successfully utilize digital technologies in managing innovations. This research uses a comparative case study method to examine cases of Japanese and Chinese companies. The objective is to advance the research on innovation management and bridge the gap between research literatures on innovation and digital technology.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
(1) I have completed a literature review. Currently I am working on revision and preparing for journal submission. (2) I am working on drafting chapters for a book on Digitalization of Corporate Innovation. The book is based on the case studies that I have studied. The purpose of the book is to help executives better utilize digital technologies to enhance corporation innovation. (3) I have completed a case study on a Japanese company about their use of digital technologies in new product development and solving social issues in Africa. The case has been published at Hitotsubashi Business Review 2023 Spring. (4) I have drafted two case studies on two Chinese companies in China about their use of digital technologies in their business innovation and transformation.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The main reason is the COVID-19 pandemic. The main research method for this study is case study. In order to make progress, I need to visit companies in Japan and China to do field research including interviews and data collection. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, I can not do field visits as I have originally planned. I have been working hard to deal with this difficulty, including utilizing online methods to conduct case studies.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
As the coronavirus pandemic is coming the end, I am planning to arrange company visits in Japan and China to conduct case study interviews and data collection. In this academic year, I will focus on writing the book chapters and will try to publish a book by end of academic year of 2024.
