| Outline of Research at the Start |
トマス・ホッブズとジョン・ロックはともに17世紀イングランドの政治思想家として日本でも広く知られている。とりわけ彼らの自然状態論や契約による国家の成立は名高い。しかしホッブズとロックは政治と宗教の関係についても深い考察を巡らした。本研究ではそのような彼らの思想を、17世紀半ばイングランドの思想状況の中に位置づける。ホッブズに関しては、革命期の寛容論争およびリチャード・オーヴァトンとの関係を明らかにし、英文雑誌での論文掲載にまで至ることを目指す。ロックに関しては、広く1660年代の同時代人の議論を調査する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study has considered the religious thought of Hobbes and Locke in the context of the English Revolution. In particular, it has explored the possibility that Hobbes used the argument of his contemporary thinkers in writing the religious part of Leviathan.

ホッブズやロックの政治思想・宗教思想は影響力が大きく、今日の日本でもよく知られている。本研究は、このような彼らの思想が同時代のどのような課題や論争を念頭に置いて生み出されたのかを明らかにしてきた。これにより彼らの思想について、ひいては政治と宗教の関係について、理解を深めることが出来た。この研究結果は海外の有力な学術誌に発表することが出来、国際的にも認められる水準の研究が出来たと言える。
