Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of number of chewing strokes on stress release. Increase in salivary cortisol or amylase level was selected as an indicator of increase in stress. As stress loading, subjects were required to perform arithmetic calculations. Next, they were asked to chew gum. Change in salivary cortisol levels or amylase levels immediately after stress loading and chewing was determined. The results showed that differences in the number of chewing strokes according to chewing time affected stress release, and suggest that the effect of chewing on stress release increases with time.
