All species of mycobacteria have a repertoire of phosphatidylinositol (PI)-based glycolipids, known as lipoarabinomannan (LAM) and lipomannan (LM) as components of the plasma membrane and cell wall. LM and LAM are major immunomodulatory molecules of the M.tuberculosis cell wall, but their role as the components of cell wall structure remains elusive.
