中近世日本においては「奈良絵本」と呼ばれる豪華な絵入り写本が流行し、大名家を中心としたネットワークの中で狩野派の絵師たちが活躍していた。
従来、これらは個別に研究が進められてきたが、本研究は作品群を俯瞰的に把握しつつ、新たに狩野派の画論の分析を進め、画題生成の道筋を立体的に把握する。とくに中国明代の出版文化の受容を併せみることで、表象文化の持つ時代性と文学性、ひいては文学圏の実態を多面的に解明しようとする点が、この研究の独創的な着眼点である。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Our project sought to link the picture scrolls and pictorial materials of medieval and early modern Japan with the paintings and painting theory of the Kano school. By analyzing these materials from multiple perspectives, including Japanese literature, history, art history, and Japanese and Chinese literature, we aimed to elucidate the actual conditions of the arts and sciences that formed the foundation of representational culture. Additionally, we examined the specific aspects of the accumulation and dissemination of knowledge within the daimyo family. Of particular significance was the publication in full color of the complete picture and research results, including four rare copies, focusing on the “caricature scrolls” produced successively within the Kano school in the 17th century. This project enabled us to present the significance, innovative methodologies, and concrete research findings that link painting subjects, painting theory, and scholarly history.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
中近世日本の表象文化をめぐり、個別の事例研究に傾いたこれまでの研究動向を省みて、奈良絵本・絵巻等と狩野派の営為とを連結し、総体としてその意義を浮かび上がらせた点にまず学術的意義が認められる。とくに研究の手薄であった狩野派の「戯画」に着目し、その全容を明らかにするとともに、狩野派絵師の活動や、中国明代の文物の受容とその日本的変容、また江戸時代前期における黄檗文化の摂取と大名家のネットワークを合わせ見ることで、各画題に内包された文学性と時代性を解明した点は、東アジアにおける表象文化の交流および出版文化研究にも資する成果として社会的意義が大きい。
