Outline of Research at the Start

UNEP世界水銀アセスメントによると，環境中への水銀の排出は全世界で1960トンもある．八戸市で繁殖するウミネコの水銀濃度が他地域のカモメ 属に比べ高いことや，ウミネコの水銀汚染が20年前から急激に進行していることから，海洋生態系の水銀汚染の影響は広範囲である懸念がある．本研究では，ウミネコを研究対象種とし，日本沿岸の複数のウミネコ繁殖地から親鳥の血液，羽根と餌生物を採集し，水銀汚染の影響を受けている範囲と程度を明らかにする．次に，窒素安定同位体比および水銀濃度の測定とバイオロギングの手法による移動軌跡の計測を組み合わせ，日本周辺海域で水銀汚染のホットスポットを特定する手法を開発する．

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

海鳥類の羽根は成長する際に化学物質をその中に保存し，成長したあとは代謝的には不活性となり，非侵襲的に採集することが可能である．多くの鳥類は，1年に1回換羽が起こるが，正確な換羽時期は知られていない．そこで，半野外施設で飼育されているウミネコを定期的に観察することで，風切り，尾，頭部の羽根の換羽パターンを明らかにした．ウミネコ5個体の換羽を観察した結果，初列風切羽根については，8月上旬に換羽が始まり，9月初旬には換羽が完了した．尾羽根については，初列風切羽根の換羽中から換羽が始まり，どの個体も初列風切羽根の換羽が終了後の9月下旬には尾羽の換羽が完了した．頭部に8月初旬に冬羽が見られ，12月下旬には再び夏羽へと換羽した．また，羽根の水銀濃度と安定同位体比の関係を再解析した結果，窒素安定同位体比が高くなると水銀濃度が高くなるという有意な関係はないが，換羽パターンとの関係から初列風切羽根1番の羽根が，繁殖終了後から次の換羽までの約1年間にウミネコが環境から暴露した水銀を反映していると言えることがわかった．初列風切羽根10番の羽根は，水銀濃度の変動が小さく，個体群間の水銀汚染の程度を比較する上で有効であることが示唆された．また，北海道の天売島，新潟の粟島，青森県の蕪島で繁殖しているウミネコの越冬海域の推定ができ，越冬海域と水銀汚染の関係が示せることが明らかとなった．
