Outline of Research at the Start

近年、単一分子など極限的に微細な系を活性層とするトランジスタを形成し、その中での電子や分子のダイナミクスを応用して、エレクトロニクスに新しい局面を拓こうとする研究が重要となりつつある。我々は、原子スケールのギャップを有する極微金属電極を用いて、回折限界をはるかに超えて単一分子のテラヘルツ分光を行い、分子の超高速振動や電子状態を明らかにする研究を行ってきた。本研究では、これまでの研究をさらに発展させ、分子振動と電子伝導の強い結合や、フラーレンに内包された水分子の核スピンを量子情報処理への応用に展開し、原子スケールの「テラヘルツナノサイエンス」という新しい分野をさらに推進・深化させる。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

近年、量子ドット、単一分子など極微ナノ構造を活性層に用いた新規トランジスタの研究が注目されている。特に、単一分子は分子機能を応用できるデバイスとして注目されるとともに、分子振動や核スピンなどが新しい量子情報の媒体となる可能性も検討されている。このようなナノ構造中の量子準位や分子振動などの素励起のエネルギーは、おおよそテラヘルツ(THz)電磁波の光子エネルギーに対応するため、THz電磁波との相互作用の研究は、ナノ量子構造の物理の解明やその応用に適している。特に、ナノギャップ中のTHz電界は大きく増強されるため、極めて強いTHz交流電界と電子系の相互作用という非常に興味深い状況も作り出せることもわかってきた。上記のような背景の下、現在立ち上がりつつある原子スケールの「テラヘルツナノサイエンス」という新しい分野をさらに推進・深化させ、応用への展開可能性を探ることを本研究の目的とする。
本年度は、特に、単一の水分子を内包したフラーレン分子(H2O@C60)を活性層とする単一分子トランジスタのクーロン安定化ダイアグラムやコンダクタンススペクトルを詳細に検討し、外部の電極から注入される伝導電子が内包された水分子の核スピンを反転させるプロセスについて検討を続けている。さらに、半導体量子ドットや量子ポイントコンタクトとsplit ring resonator (SRR)と呼ばれるTHz共振器との結合系において、極少数の電子系とTHz共振器系においても、SRRのギャップ付近で電子系とテラヘルツ電磁波の超強結合状態を電気的に観測することに成功し、量子情報をTHz電磁波の力を借りて空間的に離れた位置で共有することを可能にするとともに、超強結合による物性の制御など新しい可能性への端緒についた。

Reason

本年度は、単一分子トランジスタの作製に不可欠な金属ナノ電極の通電断線に関して、理論的な考察が進み、電子の運動エネルギーが金属の表面拡散エネルギーを越えたときに1電子が1原子に衝突して原子を移動させるという機構を理論的に表現し、実験データをよく説明できることを示した。
さらに、単一H2O@C60分子トランジスタへの電子の注入により、単一水分子の回転励起が誘起されること、さらにパラ・オルソ状態が高速に揺らぐ現象に関して、単一H2O@C60分子トランジスタの励起状態のエネルギーを解析し、オルソ-パラ変換を起こすプロセスについて検討が進んだ。また、電気抵抗検出による電子スピン共鳴システムを構築し、単層グラフェンの電子スピン共鳴の観測に成功した。これらの成果は、ナノギャップ中の単一分子の核スピン状態を電気的に検出する上で不可欠かつ革新的な技術である。さらに、理論的な面では、水分子を内包したフラーレン分子における電子状態を正確に記述する目的で、ファンデルワールス密度汎関数を元にした混成汎関数を用いた電子状態解析を行った。
ナノギャップ電極による電界集中の効果に関しては、赤外フェムト秒パルスを金ナノアンテナに照射することで、金/誘電体界面で増強された電磁場を生成し、これを利用することで、金属電子のトンネル放出を誘起し、赤外光の瞬時電場の向きを検出できることを実証した。
さらに、半導体ヘテロ構造に超微細加工を行って実現できる量子ドット/ポイントコンタクト構造とスプリットリング共振器(SRR)と呼ばれる微小なTHz共振器を用いた電子系と電磁波の超強結合の実現に継続して取り組み、極少数の電子系でも電磁波と超強結合が実現できることが明らかになった。また、電気的な測定を行うことにより、単一共振器・ナノ構造についても超強結合の情報が得られたことは大きな進展である。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今後も引き続き単一分子トランジスタの量子伝導と核スピンの検出と応用に関する実験と考察を継続する。特に、伝導電子を介したH2O@C60分子における水分子のパラ-オルソ変換の起源について明らかにする。さらに2 Tぐらいまでの磁場で現れるクーロンピークコンダクタンスのヒステリシスについても機構を解明する。また、単一分子トランジスタの電極を強磁性体に置き換えた場合の物理についても検討を進める。さらに、電気的検出による1個の水素原子のNMR測定にも継続して挑戦する。
また、半導体ヘテロ構造に微細加工を施して実現できる量子ドットとTHz共振器の超強結合系の実験を継続して行う。量子ドットとスプリットリング共振器(split-ring resonator; SRR)と呼ばれる微小なTHz共振器との超強結合が実現できると、量子ドット内の量子情報を電磁波という形で遠方に伝送することができ、空間的に離れた量子ドット間の量子相関を実現できる。昨年度、量子ドットや量子ポイントコンタクト中の電子系とSRR THz共振器系の(超)強結合を実現することに成功したので、今後、マクロな距離離れている量子構造間の量子相関の実現に取り組む。特に、長距離の伝送に必要なSRRを並べた構造については、放射ロスを低減できるようにトポロジカルな構造を検討しており、その伝搬特性についてもTHzイメージング技術などを用いて調べていく。
