歌謡映画の分析を通じて、観光地としてのハワイのイメージの源流を究明する。
ハワイを描いた映画／映像は、①美空ひばりら著名人が主演する歌謡映画②日系人の歴史に言及した映画に分類される。①は、すべて当時の人気歌手が主演し、劇中で主題歌を歌う歌謡映画であり、主題歌と映画のメディアミックスによってハワイのイメージを日本国内で流布していった。本研究では、シナリオ／映像分析はもとより、人気歌手のハワイでの興行記録と日系人の関与などの当時の記録を調査することによって、ハワイのガイドブックやテレビ番組の報道以前に構築されたハワイのイメージの源流を明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examines the trials and changes experienced by the Issei and their children, the Nisei, in the wake of the outbreak of war between the U.S. and Japan, and how films have portrayed these experiences through Japanese films made in the 1950s and 1960s that were set in Hawaii. Specifically, the most striking difference between the two major films, “A Night in Hawaii” (1953) and “Mother Country” (1962), is that the conflict between the Issei immigrants and their Nisei children in the wake of the war is only hinted at in “A Night in Hawaii,” whereas it is clearly depicted in “Mother Country”, The conflict was a major factor in the progression of the story.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
1950年代から60年代に製作された日本映画を通じて、日系一世と二世の試練と変容を分析することで、異文化交流の複雑な側面を明らかにすることができる。また、日米開戦という重大な歴史的出来事を背景に、移民一世と二世の関係性を映画がどのように描写してきたかを明らかにすることは、当時の社会的状況や価値観を理解する手がかりとなる。さらに、『ハワイの夜』と『山河あり』の二つの映画を比較することで、同じテーマを異なる視点から描いた作品の特徴と違いを明確にし、映画製作の技法やナラティブ構造の理解を深めるだけでなく、同時期の映画におけるテーマの進化や変遷を捉える上でも重要である。
