| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究ではコーパス分析の手法を用いて、生命科学分野の日本人のメタディスコース学習プロセスを解明し、メタディスコース学習指導案を提示する。まず生命科学分野の国際ジャーナルに発表された英語論文に使用されているメタディスコースマーカーを抽出し、それらを規範として、日本人学生及び研究者が過剰にあるいは過少に使用しているマーカーを同定する。一方で、英語論文の発表を相当数経験している日本人研究者のメタディスコースの使用状況も調査する。これらの結果をもとに日本人が修得しやすいものとしにくいものの分析を行い、今後の生命科学分野の英語教育に反映させることを目的とするものである。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Learning how to utilize metadiscourse markers (MDMs) used in experimental research articles in the life sciences is essential for students in this field to read and write papers, and for researchers to succeed in publishing their research results. However, the use of MDMs in this field has not been clarified, nor have effective teaching methods been established. In this study, using corpus analysis methods, we identified the MDMs under- and overused by Japanese researchers and students. The major corpora we created include a corpus of published papers written by Japanese researchers, a corpus of papers written by non-Japanese researchers, and a corpus of research reports written by Japanese students. We also tested two teaching plans and proposed an effective method for Japanese students to learn MDMs.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
近年、日本人研究者による論文発表件数の順位が低下しているが、一つの原因として、日本人研究者が論文を英語で執筆することを明示的に学習していないことが挙げられる。本課題では生命科学分野の実験論文において日本人研究者及び、日本人学生が過剰・過少使用するMDMを同定し、学生にMDMを効果的に使用しているサンプルを提示することがMDMの習得につながることを明らかにした。この結果を科学英語教育の場で応用することは、日本人研究者が非日本語話者にとって読みやすい論文を執筆する一助となることが期待できる。
