Outline of Research at the Start

This professional communication (PC) project is designed to help advanced computer science students better prepare for job interviews with English video production and analysis. The goal is to create an institutional reference website with videos of student mock interviews and expert reviews.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We were able to establish a new media design curriculum as part of the technical and business writing coursework in undergraduate and graduate courses with an exclusive focus on video design for professional communication.

We focused on understanding how linguistic entrepreneurship works, and how digital entrepreneurial storytelling-based coursework could be designed specifically for the computer science majors in a technical university in preparation for the job market. Three publications already resulted from this initiative. We then published data in IEEE conference proceedings.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The project is moving rather smoothly because we were able to establish a specific document design and video design-based coursework which are interrelated, and works seamlessly hand-in-hand with each other. We trialed our study based on four different kinds of video-based analysis for students to discuss different technology projects in the market, it's viability, and student preparation for job interviews.
The project is moving smoothly because we adopted a project-based language learning and soft content language integrated learning (CLIL) focus towards teaching ET (entrepreneurial thinking) and innovation in a classroom context through role-playing, technical documentation and DS video production.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In future, we will focus on designing a student e-portfolio for technical projects related to 3D printing, and other specific Industry 4.0 applications in the market. The idea will be to develop our students’ argumentative and reasoning-based English speaking competence with digital portfolio design using a video-based SWOT(Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) analysis framework. The project will be trialed with four types of SWOT analysis including Self SWOT analysis, Company SWOT analysis, Process SWOT analysis, and Start-up SWOT analysis. Three types of videos will be part of the project - animation/whiteboard video, typography video, and live action video.
