We assessed the level of hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1α), which is known to be a transcription factor of VEGF. The mRNA levels of HIF-1α in bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMC) were measured by real-time PCR in 13 aplastic anemia (AA) patients. HIF-1α in chronic AA patients was not significantly greater than that in acute AA patients. These data indicated that a high level of HIF-1α in chronic AA does not cause the high level of VEGF in a single platelet in chronic AA. The mRNA of HIF-1α in megakaryocytes should be analyzed to better understand the role of HIF-1α in AA.
