Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research, Symbolic Interactionism, a prevalent theory in social psychology, has been applied to politeness phenomena. Identity and role are SI's concepts, which function as a pivot to trigger certain linguistic politeness phenomena. I have investigated greeting formulae and speech level shifts in Japanese by using these concepts. Identities change as the interaction proceeds, and these contantly changing identities are implemented as roles, which are then realised in linguistic terms.
