Research Abstract |
Long-term treatment with antiepileptics has been known to cause a variety of bone disorders. We have obtained that carbamazepine (CBZ) had increased bone mineral density (BMD) although various antiepileptic agent had decreased BMD in growing rats. The present study was undertaken to investigate effects of long termed administration of CBZ on bone metabolism in growing rats using 3D-imaging of the tibia and serum bone makers. In addition, the effects of co-administration of CBZ with other antiepileptic also investigated. In the results, it was suggested that CBZ may increase BMD by accelerating bone calcification and co-administration of CBZ may not increase BMD in valproate induced osteopenia.
