Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This paper focuses on “Visuality of the Representation” in the novels of Natsume Soseki. Its purpose is to elucidate the characteristics of the visuality by investigating how he adapted elements of the formative (plastic) arts for his poetry (or literature). The following approaches were employed: (1) analyzing his interest in schools of paintings, especially Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood by investigating his memorandums found in his collection of books about arts and paintings; (2) considering the transition of his notion about correlation between “Paintings (plastic arts)” and “Poetry” and that of his “Partial Literature” from various angles ranging from his novels like “The Three-Corned World (Kusamakura),” ”Sanshiro” to the changes of Soseki’s career and his place.
