| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research clarifies transcendentalism in S.T. Coleridge, one of the great critics of the English Romantic Age, and Kukai,the founder of Japanese Shingon Esoteric Buddhism.
Accorindg to Coleridge, religion requires "contemplation of the universal" as it enables us to overcome selfishness and behave as "the one in all" through Kantian aesthetic disinterestedness.
For both Coleridge and Kukai, our will and volition to visualize the reality of "I being with the Infinite" prove our transcendental aethetic faculty to see“through and with, but never by the senses.”Their common aim of writing was to lead people to the everyday experiences of the real absolute joy of visualizing "I in all."

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
キリストの福音の核となる、我々被造物と父なる神との人格的繋がりを語るような言葉は真言密教にはみられない。しかし、コールリッジと空海はともに永遠を視覚化する言語(「視覚的言語」“visual language”)を用い、「感覚や感覚機能によってでは決してなく、ただそれらを通しそれらをもって」、「永遠なるものと共に在る」美しい現実を捉え、真の幸せをつくりだせる我々の潜在能力を引き出すことを宗教教育の要とみなしていることを指摘した。ロックの経験論では十分に説明しきれない、超越論の「視覚的言語」が描く普遍的喜びの体験は、古今東西を通じて美的教育の重要性を示し、現在の教育が進むべき方向を示唆している。
