Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examined the concurrent and longitudinal relations of SES, marital conflict, parenting practices, and child social skills and behavioral adjustment. The sample included 1,712 preschoolers aged 5 years at T1, and first-graders aged 6 years at T2, participating in the second wave of a longitudinal study in Aichi prefecture. Parents completed a self-reporting questionnaire regarding their SES, marital conflict, parenting practices, and child behavioral adjustment. Then, their children’s teachers evaluated the children’s social skills. The path analysis results revealed that T1 family economy and parental education levels were respectively related to T1 social skills and T2 behavioral problems, through their influence on marital conflict, and parenting practices. Notably, after controlling for T1 behavioral problems as mediating mechanisms in the link between family factors and behavioral adjustment, T1 social skills significantly, inversely influenced T2 behavioral problems.
