Research Abstract |
TO ELUCIDATE THE MECHANISM OF CATALYTIC REACTIONS, DEVELOPMENTS OF HIGH SENSITIVE INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY FOR STUDIES ON THE ADSORPTION AND REACTIONS OVER CATALYSTS HAVE BEEN DONE. BY MEANS OF FOURIER-TRANSFORM INFRARED SPECTROMETER (FT-IR), THE MECHANISM OF METHANOL FORMATION FROM CO AND <H_2> REACTIONS OVER Zr <O_2> HAS BEEN STUDIED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FORMATE AND METHOXIDE SPECIES WERE FORMED OVER Zr <O_2> SURFACES DURING THE COURSE OF THE REACTION AND METHOXIDE SPECIES IS THE REACTION INTERMEDIATE FOR METHANOL FORMATION. THE DISSOCIATIVE ADSORPTION OF HYDROGEN OVER Zr <O_2> AT ROOM TEMPERATURE WAS FOUND FOR THE FIRST TIME BY FT-IR. THE ADSORPTION OF NITROGEN AND HYDROGEN OVER CO/ <Al_2> <O_3> AND Ti <O_2> WAS ALSO STUDIED. AN FT-IR REFLECTION ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPIC METHOD (FT-IR RAS) WAS NEWLY CONSTRUCTED IN OUR LABORATORY (FT-IR RAS). THE APPARATUS IS CONSIST OF AN FT-IR, A PHOTOELASTIC MODULATOR (PEM), A LOCK-IN AMPRIFIER AND A REFLECTION ATTACHMENT. TO TEST THE APPARATUS IR SPECTRA OF SUBMONOAYERS OF ARCHIDIC ACID ON GOLD (LANGMUIR-BLODGETT FILM) IN THE RAGE OF 4000-650 <cm^(-1)> HAS BEEN OBSERVED BY USING FT-IR RAS. TO STUDY THE CATALYTIC REACTION BY FT-IR RAS, THE ADSORPTION AND REACTION OF METHANOL OVER A CLEAN Cu PLATE WERE CARRIED OUT. IN THE PRESENCE OF VAPOR PHASE OF METHANOL IR-RAS SPECTRA OF ADSORBED SPECIES WERE OBTAINED AND AFTER EVACUATION OF VAPOR PHASE AN OXYMETHYLENE TYPE ADSORBED SPECIES ON THE SURFACE WAS OBSERVED. OVER Ni AND Cu PLATES, THE ADSORPTION OF VARIOUS CARBOYXYLIC ACIDS WAS ALSO STUDIED BY FT-IR RAS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE FT-IR RAS METHOD IS A POWERFUL IN-SITU TECHNIQUE FOR STUDY THE CATALYTIC REACTIONS.
