Research Abstract |
In this study, we investigated the developmental courses of interaction between mother and infant born at high- or low-risk, through experimental obsevations during the first year of life. We focused at neurobehavioral characteristics of infants, behavioral modality of mothers, and interactional modality between them. Coding of behaviors was done every one second on facial expressions, vocalizations, and body movement of infant and mother on the videotape, by the coders who are naive to the aim of this study. Data were analyzed in respect of occurence and co-occurance of each behavior. For low-risk infants, it was demonstrated that infants' expression differentiated, and their latitude of interest expanded to the surrounding( especially to their mothers ) as months went by. Simultaneously, mothers behavioral modality changed from direct contact to indirect 'contact in the visual field of infants. For high-risk infants, though general movement intended to be inhibited when gazing at their mothers, other more premature motilities were likely to be kept. Consulting results and methods of researches in other institution, it was suggested that the insufficient inhibition caused or accelerated ill-balanced mental functions.
