Research Abstract |
Development of Kingdom of Thailand has closely been related with Chao Phraya River Basin. The team investigated various hydrological and hydraulical features of Monsoon Asia, including socio-economical aspects, and focusing the Chao Phraya River Basin. It was found out that the total Chao Phraya River Basin is now in a development stage, and its character is rapidly changing. Regarding with water usage in the region, the natural irrigation system is substituted by the flood control system. Since the available amount of water in Thailand is relatively small compared with her huge irrigation area and the increasing energy demands, the meaning of flood protection is more and more important. Severe shortage of water is observed in the Northeast of Thailand up to Mekhong River. The team also observed salinity increase in a few reservoirs due to the excessive usage of ground water. In the South, a large scale of mud avalanches were observed due to inappropriate management of forestry. It was also found that the remote sensing technology, combined with various conventional technologies of hydrology, hydraulics and river engineering, is a strong tool to deal with those problems. Realizing those facts, Thai scholars in the team have already been alerted and, as one of the cosequences of this research, they supplied a lot of data available to the team, which are now in analyzing stage. They also investigated Japanese river management systems, which resulted the initiation of several bilateral cooperation programs. The Royal Thai Government and UNESCO recognized these activities of the team, including the formation of IHP National Committies in Thailand and Malaysia.
