Research Abstract |
Our research team went to China during Sept. 27 to Nov. 7 in 19991. This year we conducted the archaeological survey at two sites. One is a city site belonging to Xiajiading Lower Layer Culture, located in Nanliang, Xiaxinqiu Villae, Huashige Town, xin city of the western part of Liaoning Province. This city site is larger in size than the one in Mt. Chengzi in Lingyuan Prefecture we surveyed the previous year, and is preserved in good condition, mostly maintaining the original structure. The survey of this site will contribute to understanding many aspects of walled cities of Xiajiajding Lower Layer Culture. The other site is a group of stone-layered mounds in Yushantou, Houshihuiyao Village, Jinzhou Town, Dalian City, which is close to the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. This site is similar to another group of stone-layered mounds in Mt. Siping, which it is prohibited to enter. Thus, our survey allowed us to achieve the results in our research almost as we originally planned. Although

we placed emphasis on archaeological survey of above-mentioned two sites, we also visited other sites and remains and museums in the eastern part of Liaoning Province for a short period, being able to make observational records and to measure some of the excavated objects related to our research. At the same time, we were able to exchange candid opinions with our Chinese colleagues, while observing archaeological remains. Next, We went to Shandong Province to participate in the symposium on Chengziya commemorating the 70th anniversary of the excavation of the site. Later we visited some of the archaeological sites in Shandong Province for a comparative study of ancient sites of the two provinces, and obtained some results. Our Chinese colleagues were invited to Japan in return during Mar. 7 to 29 in 1992. They visited archaeological sites and museums in Kyushu, Kansai, and Kanto areas, and discussed Japanese collection of objects excavated in China and Korea with us. Both groups acknowledged the importance of comparative study of Japanese archaeological objects and those of Liaoning Province. Less
