| Research Abstract |
東北大学グル-プは主として、1)150ー350°Cの温度条件下における黄鉄鉱と熱水溶液の反応キネティックスについての一連の実験、2)沖縄トラフより採取された海底熱水鉱床に伴う硫化鉱物、3)日本の種々の金鉱床及びその他の代表的鉱床から採集された黄鉄鉱についての鉱物学的研究を行った。一方、ペンシルヴァニア州立大学グル-プは主として、4)150ー350°Cで種々の化学環境下で黄鉄鉱、白鉄鉱、磁硫鉄鉱、赤鉄鉱等を合成、5)東太平洋海嶺より採取した海底熱水鉱床に伴う硫化鉱物についての鉱物学的研究を行った。
両グル-プは密接な研究連絡を取りあい、上記1)ー5)について分担および共同して種々の物性、化学組成および同位体比の測定を行った。ペンシルヴァニア州立大学からは夏期にU.Graham氏が約2ケ月間、K.OsseoーAsare氏が10日間東北大学を訪問した。また研究代表者大本は約2ヶ月間ペンシルヴァニア州立大学を訪問し、共同で各種の実験および測定を行い、活発な意見交換を行った。
その結果、黄鉄鉱は唯一のキネティックスの経過を経て生成されるという考えが学界では支配的であったが、我々の共同研究によって、この考えは誤っていることが明らかとなり、黄鉄鉱の生成メカニズムと種々の鉱物学的特性(特に、結晶格子定数、光学的異方性酸化速度、半導性、電気的特性)および化学組成(Fe/S比)には密接な関連がある可能性が非常に強いことが明らかとなった。これらの研究を通して、異なる分野および環境にある研究者が大学間協力研究によって交流することが非常に有意義であった。
