Research Abstract	初年度は、大陸斜面域の流動の力学と生物・化学的諸過程に関する学術的研究に焦点を合わせて、日米双方の研究情報の交換を行ない、問題意識の整理を行うとともに、共同研究計画を具体的に打ち合わせた。杉本は8月下旬にウッズホ-ル海洋研究所を訪門して、J.A.Whitehead,T.Joyce,P.Wiebe博士達と合い討論し、先方からは米国東岸の陸棚域とくにCape CodとGeoges Bank周辺域における流動と動植物プランクトンなどの物質輸送過程の最近の研究成果・手法の情報を得た。また、研究所内で東シナ海の陸棚縁辺域および相模湾,土佐湾をモデル海域とした,黒潮と陸岸地形との相互作用による沿岸から外洋への物質の輸送を明らかにするための予備実験を行った。野崎は8月中旬にウッズホ-ル海洋研究所を訪門して、SEEP(Shelf Edge Excharge Process)の研究者たちと会い、計画の進行状況に関する情報を取得した。さらに、ニュ-ハンプシャ-での米国化学者の会議に出席して、オ-シャン・マ-ジン過程のセッションで広く情報を取得した。藤本は、11月下旬に海洋科学技術センタ-において、センタ-発足20周年記念シンポジウムのため来日したC.Dormanウッズホ-ル海洋研究所長、S.Honjo博士等と会い、かつ、12月にウッズホ-ル海洋研究所を訪門して、G.M.Purdy博士らのグル-プとも会合を持って、大西洋のKane断裂帯およびその近くの大西洋中央海嶺を対象とした平成4年度以降の共同調査計画をより具体的に決定した。
