Research Abstract	平成5年度においては、約38〜19億年前に生成された堆積岩、変成岩および金属鉱床の試料約500個について、鉱物学的、岩石学的および地球化学的な研究を行なった。試料は、グリーンランド、南アフリカ、オーストラリアおよびカナダから採集したものである。岩石の化学分析は地殻進化および表層環境の指標となる主要元素および微量元素の存在量のほかに、生物活動および表層環境の指標となるC、N、S元素存在量、およびC、O、S元素のミクロスケールにおける同位体比、さらに熱水活動の時代と規模を明らかにするSrおよびNd元素の同位体比の測定に重点がおかれた。また、始生代大気が無酸素であったという従来の学説の大きな根拠とされていた古土壌の化学データおよびウラン鉱の溶解速度のデータを詳細に検討した。過去3ケ年間に我々のグループによって得られた種々の地球化学的データは、地球表層環境、生物進化、大気-海洋-地殻の化学組成の変遷についての従来の学説は誤っており、約35億年前にはすでに酸素発生型の光合成生物活動は活発であり、大気は酸素に富み、現在と同じような地表環境と元素循環が行なわれていたという我々の学説が正しいことをますます指示するものである。これらの新しい成果は米国Science誌にも発表し、国内の種々の新聞によっても取り上げられた。
