Research Abstract |
The international nucleotide sequence database is constructed through the international collaboration among Europe (EBI ; European Bioinformatics Institute), U.S.A.(NCBI ; National Center for Biotechnology Information), and Japan (DDBJ ; DNA Data Bank of Japan). To proceed this international collaboration more smoothly, two international meetings (advisory and collaborative) are held annually. Because the originally planned two meetings were not held within this fiscal year (planned to be held in April 1995), we instead went to EBI and NCBI for discussing collaborative issues. We also visited the newly created NCGR (National Center for Genome Resources) at Santa Fe to find out their current situation and future. It turned out that NCGR,though its name implies, is not a governmental organization, but a mere private company. However, they does receive a grant from DOE (Department of Energy) for constructing GSDB (Genome Sequence Data Base). We discussed with NCGR and NCBI in detail about the future of USA DNA databanks. The situation in Europe is much better. EBI is now constructing a new building at the Genome Park, Hinxton, and research activity as well as service activity will be strengthened in the near future.
