Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research project is to develop a biodegradable, synthetic tissue adhesive glue which is based on a urethane prepolymer incorporated with hydrolyzable ester groups is a molecule. Our previous study showed that urethane prepolymers specially designed as a surgical adhesive performed very well in vivo even in cases with massive bleeding. However, the major drawback was too slow biodegradation rate. In order to improve this problem, a new research project was initiated here. Revised molecular design was to incorporate hydrolyzable biodegradable functional groups in a molecule. To this end, a polyester type polyol was newly prepared and incorporated into a designed prepolymer. In vivo animal experiments using rats verified that new version of synthetic glue exhibited a much faster biodegradability but maintained its adhesivity and mechanical adaption in very hostile, pulsatile conditions.
