Research Abstract |
The RSA (respiratory sinus arrythmia), related to cardiac parasympathetic activity (PA), and MWSA (Mayr Wave sinus arrythmia), related to sympathetic activity (SA), components derived from spectral analysis of cardiac R-R intervals at rest were examined first for their relations with age, diet and obesity, which were found to be significant modulators, whereas stress-related personality and various stressors were not related. In the study on patients with panic disorders, the mean MWSA/RSA ratio as a more specific indication of SA was in the order of panic disorder>generalized anxiety disorder>controls, suggesting the feasibility of the methods as well as the hyperexcitation of the SA in the disorder as has been pointed out. An examination on the office workers revealed, moreover, MWSA/RSA ratio at awakeing rest correlated significantly with overworking time as well as commuting time. Finally, we clarified the correlation with sleep stage and the MWSA/RSA ratio showing the lowest value at deep sleep stage with a suggestion that the difference in the MWSA/RSA ratio between awaking rest and deep sleep may reflect mental stress at awaking rest as a new index.
