Research Abstract

電子陽電子衝突装置「LEP」は、平成7年度前半はZ^O共鳴ピークの回りをスキャンする運転を行なった。これにより、共鳴ピークの裾野のデータ量をこれまでの約2倍に増やした。また、7年度後半は、超電導加速空洞の本格的な稼働を行ない、加速器のエネルギーをZ^Oピークの約1.5倍という未知の領域で上げて物理実験を行なった。この成功により、今後はZ^Oピークより離れ、更に高いエネルギーでの運転へと移っていく(LEP-II)。東京大学が主導的役割を果たしながら進めてきた国際共同実験「OPAL」では、結局実験開始から通算で500万以上のZ^O粒子崩壊事象を記録することができた。また、未知の高エネルギーでの運転でも順調に測定を行ない、質の良いデータを得ることができた。
東京大学の建設した電磁カロリメーターは、平成7年度も慎重に保守を行ない稼働を続けてきた。その全カウンター9440本が高性能を維持しつつ作動しており、OPAL実験のほとんどすべての物理解析に重要な貢献をしている。今年は特に、前半の共鳴ピークのスキャン、後半のエネルギー増強、という大きな加速器環境の変化にもかかわらず、精度の高い測定を行なうことができた。
平成7年度の主な研究成果としては、(1)Z^O共鳴ピークのスキャンにより、Z^O粒子の質量および崩壊幅の測定精度をこれまでより約40%上げることが可能になった。これにより、素粒子の統一理論を究極の精度で検証する。(2)Z^Oピークの約1.5倍という全く未知のエネルギー領域での実験により、標準的な過程の測定に加え、超対称性粒子・ヒッグス粒子等の探索を行なった。これらの測定・探索によって、標準理論を越える新しい物理の可能性を探ることができた。(3)平成8年度には更にエネルギーを増強してW粒子の対生成が可能になるが、それに備えて、シミュレーションによる予備研究も行なった。
