Research Abstract	現在は、観測・実験やシミュレーションの進展により、アインシュタインの一般相対論に対する関心が非常に集まっている時期と考えられる。本研究では、この機会を捕らえ、国内の一般相対論およびその周辺分野の一流研究者を集め、以下の3つの最重要課題を中心に共同研究を行い、一般相対論および重力波の基礎的理解を深め、相対論的物理学の新しい発展を図ることを目指し、その目的は十分達成されたと考える。 1.一般相対論における未解決問題の研究(解析的アプローチ:冨松彰、小玉英雄、中村卓史・数値的アプローチ:江里口良治、大原謙一、小嶌康史、真貝寿明、中村卓史) 2.観測的宇宙論とその一般相対論的取り扱い(佐々木節、二間瀬敏史、石原秀樹) 3.素粒子統一理論と一般相対論の関連(吉村太彦、細谷暁夫、小玉英雄) 平成8年度は、昨年度スタートした各研究班においてリストアップした課題について共同研究を行うとともに、若手育成にも多大の努力を払った。最終年度でもあるので、各研究班において得られた成果のとりまとめや相互の議論・交流を深め、それらについてより集中的に議論、共同研究を行うため、東京セミナーを定期的に行った(6月:お茶の水大学、9月:東京大学、1月;早稲田大学)。これらの成果については報告冊子に詳しくまとめられる。また、一般相対論全般において現在日本全国で行われている研究を鳥瞰する目的として、従来の大研究会「一般相対論と重力」の第6回目を東京工業大学で12月に行った。参加者は百数十名、講演数は前回同様50を越える盛況な研究会になり、相対論分野の活性化に大きく貢献したと考えられる。この成果は、例年同様、英文のプロシ-ディングとしてまとめられる。
