Research Abstract	表面物性の研究は急速に進展し、表面の原子配列や電子構造などの静的物性は方法論が確立し、多くの系に適用され、理解は大きく進展した。また熱平衡状態での表面反応も多くの研究者によって多角的に調べられてきている。本研究ではこのことをふまえ、次世代の研究の発展につながるものを目指した。それには表面物性の動的現象の典型例である表面上での原子の組み替えを、通常のアプローチとは異なる方法で取り組んだ。具体的には、表面電子励起に誘起された脱離と反応、非平衡な修飾原子線・分子線を用いた表面の動的現象を、実験と理論の両面から進めた。特に、金属表面上の反応に見られる高い反応選択性の原因を明らかにし、物性物理の見地から一般概念の確立を目指した。これは未だに解明されていない金属の触媒作用の本質の理解につながると思っている。また、生体をはじめさまざまに現れる電子系から格子系へのエネルギー転換過程の解明にも効果的である。直接観測できない反応の遷移状態を表面電子励起の側から眺めることで、光励起脱離、光化学反応に反応選択性に関連した成果を得ている。また非平衡の原子線と分子線の持つ特徴を生かして、表面反応が非平衡状態で進行している様子を追跡するため、非平衡ビームの作製が行われた。これを用いた表面物性の研究は緒についたところである。理論面からは、量子論の立場から励起状態と非断熱過程による脱励起を論じたり、励起状態や電子相関が関与する複雑な系を取り扱う必要がある。このように多くの困難を伴うが、夢のある研究領域を実験との協力のもとに、効果的に研究を進める方法を構築しはじめている。本研究に続く成果を期待したい。
