Research Abstract	本研究では頭骨の復元作業を仮想空間で行う方法理論、技術の開発に取り組んだ。そしてまた、仮想された頭骨の中にかつて納まっていた脳の形態を、現生人類や霊長類の脳内部の微細構造所見を参考にして、検討修正しながら推測・復元する方法理論を確立した。そして、以上の結果をもって、化石人類の頭骨と脳の多数の復元例をもって比較形態学的解析を行う方法を検討した。次にその経過を要約する。 (1)ネアンデルタール人骨の三次元復元 1993年にシリア・デデリエ洞窟で発見した良質のネアンデルタール人骨(第1号埋葬人骨)の三次元形状計測法によって、ネアンデルタールの三次元画像・立体モデルの生成、生成した立体形状データから光造形法に基づいて骨格の実体モデルを製作、また、当ネアンデルタールの歩行等の運動機能及び成長の過程を復元する方法理論を確立した。 (2)ネアンデルタール頭骨のCT測定 1997年に同洞窟で新たに発見したネアンデルタール人骨(第2号埋葬人骨)のCT測定による化石頭骨の三次元画像復元、ラピッドプロトタイピング技術による実体モデル創成等と関連する方法理論、技術開発に取り組み、最後に化石脳の復元を実施した。以上の研究は、デデリエ洞窟において発見された多数の化石人骨を素材として取り組んできた先導的な研究によって開発した斬新な方法理論や分析技術を新たな発見物に適用し、それをより洗練された内容に発展させることを目指し、その研究結果をもって、ネアンデルタールと我々現代人との関係について従来とは異なる角度からの視座を提供しようとして計画されたものである。
