Research Abstract

本研究課題は、南北両極域の広範囲を高時間分解能で観測している国際Super DARNレーダー網の特徴・利点を最大限に生かし、両半球の極域電磁圏で生起している電磁現象のマクロ的・ミクロ的特性を明確にし、太陽風と地球磁気圏との相互作用の物理的プロセスを総合的に解き明かすことを最終目的としている。
今年度に得られた具体的な研究成果として、1)地磁気共役点領域を観測するHFレーダーと光学オーロラの同時観測データを用いて、夜側電離圏で観測される太陽方向プラズマ高速流の成因について考察した。その結果、電離圏は惑星間磁場の南北成分に対して汎地球的に応答しており、高速流はその応答の一結果であることが判明した。2)太陽風、Super DARN、さらに赤道帯を取り巻いて観測された地磁気データを比較することにより、太陽風磁場の南向き状態が地球を掠め過ぎる短時間(15分)の間に、高緯度夕方側での突発的なプラズマ対流の発達と赤道でのCounter Electrojetの駆動を伴う全球的応答が観測された。3)昭和基地Super DARNで得られた長期のデータを統計解析し、レーダーエコーの原因となる電離圏プラズマ不安定の機構を調べた。4)北極Super DARNとEISCATスヴァールバルレーダーとの同時観測データを解析することにより、Super DARNで検出されたポーラーパッチの新しい生成過程を明らかにした。5)Super DARNで観測されたPc3脈動と衛星データとを比較し、その発生・伝搬機構に関して、特にカスプ域で発生頻度が高い原因などの新たな観測事実が得られた。6)10分程度で準周期的に変動する可視オーロラとHFレーダーとの比較観測から、オーロラ粒子の降下機構に関する新たな知見が得られた。
