| Research Abstract |
In this study, we focused on the analysis of linguistic encoding of event construal in natural languages, mainly English and Japanese Specifically, the research concentrated on the following themes.
1) TSUBOI conducted research on voice, incorporating latest finding in contrastive analysis. Particularly, the interconnection between case marking and event structure was analyzed, including the reflection of affectedness in linguistic form.
2) OHORI analyzed encoding of motion events, collecting data and turning them into machine-readable form. Detailed analysis of data was done, with assistance from graduate co-investigators. The collected data include those from Japanese, English, Thai, Chinese, Korean, and German.
3) NISHIMURA analyzed a wide range of metonymy-related phenomena in grammatical constructions. Particularly, a close examination was done on the expression of grammatical subject and various inferential processes involved in sentence interpretation.
4) OHORI also analyzed the realization of logical operators (such as AND and OR) in natural languages from a typological perspective.
The results of aforementioned researches have been, and will be, published in journal articles, books, and conference presentations (see the attached list of publications).
