Research Abstract

Effects of acid deposition on ecosystem
Acid deposition in Hachioji amounted to 1.1〜2.5 kmol_c ha^<-1> yr^<-1> for S and 2.3〜3.8 kmol_c ha^<-1> yr^<-1> for N, which was partly affected by Mt Oyama, Miyake Island, but mostly influenced by human activities. On the other hand S and N deposition in Towada was 0.8 and 0.7 kmol_c ha^<-1> yr^<-1>, respectively. Acid deposition in Towada was characterized by large amount of load of N derived from animal husbandry and Cl derived from sea salt.
Acid consumption by pyroclastic material on weathering amounted to 27 to 28 mmol kg^<-1> in the case of 1.0 x 10^<-3> mol L^<-1> hydrochloric acid solution. It has an important role in consuming acid in soils.
Mass balance model
Forest decline accompanied with soihacidification in southern Kanto District was deduced by mass balance model, which had the advantage to screen the areas dominantly affected by acid deposition. According to mass balance model we can propose the abatement target for acid deposition based on the deposition load and the sensitivity of forest ecosystem : reducing until 50 to 60 % of acid deposition level in1997.
